>>>WELCOME<<<

WHAT IS GOMI ?

GOMI-GOldMIne.

The underlying concept of GOMI is based on the theme, "Recycle, Reuse & Reinvent". "GOMI", meaning "rubbish" in Japanese, is a project based on the notion of recycling as a way of propagating new creation. Emphasizing on the usage of recycled materials in the process of creation, it is our intent to create an awareness of environmental issues for both the public and designers alike.

A socio-economical project conceptualized by Joyce Chin of The Serendipity Studio [Singapore] and Tetsuya Goto of WINKER [Japan], GOMI challenges its participants to find their own "goldmine" in the heaps of "gomi".

Making its first debut in the Singapore Design Festival 2007, we hope to share the idea of GOMI and bring its projects to different parts of the world.

WHO IS GOMI ?

GOMI started off as a collaborative project between THE SERENDIPITY STUDIO [Singapore] and WINKER [Japan]. We are constantly looking for like-minded people to collaborate with us. If you believe in the idea of GOMI and want to be part of GOMI, or even host it in your home country, we would love to hear from you!

The Serendipity Studio
, Singapore.

Joyce Chin started The Serendipity Studio upon her return from the UK in 2004. Working as a designer-artist and a design educator since, her design process has been evolving through the experimentations and collaborations with other artists and designers. Joyce believes that a good design is the outcome of a unique design process where craftsmanship plays an important role. She is currently experimenting with traditional craftmaking techniques and integrating them into her design process.

WINKER, Japan.

WINKER is a creative collective/label based in Osaka, Japan. Founded in 2003 by Tetsuya Goto, it is a label that collaborates with creators 'with a difference' from all over the world. Partnering with Duncan Brotherton, WINKER has expanded its activities as a creative collective. WINKER's latest project is an alternative work space project named 'OOO' (Out Of Office), where creators work alongside one another in a space aimed at creating a stimulating environment. WINKER's activities are aimed to be 'edifying' for creators. In Japanese, a 'winker' is a car indicator. In a similar way, WINKER wants to be a creative indicator for creators.

GOMI IN SINGAPORE DESIGN FESTIVAL 2007

Making its first debut in the Singapore Design Festival 2007, GOMI is one of the exhibitors in the festival’s main feature event – “UTTERUBBISH”. The exhibition will be hosted at the old City Hall building in Singapore. Anticipating more than 80,000 visitors, it will be one of the largest creative show in the city!

With a theme built around recycling, its objective is to create an awareness of environmental issues, and at the same time, challenge designers to find new expressions while adding value and/or meaning to old or discarded ideas and designs.

Harnessing on interactive web technologies, GOMIweb.org serves as a platform for exchanges between designers and users to take place. Whilst old designs are collected from designers, users may select and remix them to create new designs through an interactive “recycle bin”. In addition, users also have the choice of printing the new design onto old t-shirts or other old items, with a hands-on session in silkscreen printing.

In line with the Singapore Design Festival 07’s objectives, GOMI in Singapore is an innovative and exciting project that will create a general awareness of the design process by reaching out to the mass public with its exhibitions and workshops.

GOMI will be an ongoing project with its exhibitions and workshops running through the whole period of the festival, from 28 November to 16 December 2007.
